A picture is worth a thousand words, but it can also be worth a thousand clicks, likes or sales. Whether you’re running an e-commerce store, launching a new brand, or just trying to stand out in a crowded marketplace, product photography isn’t optional—it’s essential. But great product photography goes beyond snapping a quick photo on your phone. It’s about storytelling, creating desire, and showing your product in the best possible light—literally and figuratively.
We at Studio 13 have seen an increase in product photography needs over recent years and we’ve been so honored to work with dozens of clients, both in studio and on location, to capture their products and see how they utilize the images to grow their business, build their network and gain opportunities through marketing, advertising and even social media.
With more than 60 years of innovation behind them, Deflecto is an Indianapolis based company we’ve has the pleasure of partnering with more than once to cature their lifestyle products. Desk mats and accessories, sign holders, home air and dryer venting, and storage and organization are just some of the more than 10,000 items they’ve produced worldwide. Last fall, we shot desk mats on location for the Deflecto team, which allowed us to capture the prodycts as they are meant to be used to show the consumer functionality and style. For this most recent project, clear desk accessories served as the “model” for the shoot. Deflecto was given a style guide from their retailer, providing guidelines for how they want the items captured. It’s fun to challenge our creativity when we have a vision to stick to but still need our personal touch to come through.
Working with clear product that is also reflective in many different angles presents it’s own set of challenges when it comes to lighting. Shooting the products on a neutral wood background allowed the desk accessories to be seen, as well as show their day-to-day function. Capturing some snaps in studio gave more light control and the option to see the products both upright and lying down.
Pulling ideas and desires from the manufacturer, retailer and our own minds to mold together a final result is just one of the exciting pieces of product photography. Seeing final photos on a client website and part of branding campaigns to drive more business makes all the work and hurdles with it, every time.
Big thanks to all those involved to help make this project so successful. Looking forward to the next one!
