Introduction

There are two types of seeing – and one is more powerful than the other. You can see with your eyes and your brain forms images. You can see with your mind’s eye and your brain forms meaning, perceptions and beliefs that influence how you think, act, and live. Influencing how people think about you is what we call “positioning.”

And positioning happens in the mind of your audience. At the most basic level, Positioning is “How people think about you.” I first learned this by reading the book, Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, by Trout and Ries.

I became convinced of it after I wrote my 1st book, On Marketing.

Before I wrote my book, I was seen as just another marketing consultant. After I wrote my book, I was seen as an expert in marketing. The change happened in the mind of my audience when they saw that I had written a book. 

Instant Authority!

I gained clients more easily. Referrals multiplied more quickly. And prospects were eager to meet with me and follow my counsel. My revenues grew faster than Jack’s beanstalk. There are many ways to build authority and enhance your credibility. None come close to being an author. As you know, “author” is the root of the word AUTHORity. 

In our culture, experts have books!  Dan Kennedy, Seth Godin, Dave Ramsey, Suze Orman, Tony Robbins, and the list goes on. Did they become authorities because of their knowledge, or because of their books? They put their knowledge into their book and their book made them the authority.
You can do the same.

Shape Perception and Elevate Your Position

Speak to your audience in a way that will change how they think about you. Speak to them through the pages of your book. You get to choose the profession you are in. 

You also get to choose the position you hold in the mind of your audience. Get it right and your business will flourish. Get it wrong and you’ll continue to struggle.
